Avicii & RL Grime: there’s two names you don’t hear in the same sentence every day.
But leave it to Diplo to rally the troops from opposite ends of the dance music spectrum, each providing an exclusive one-hour mix for his BBC radio show. Avicii kicks it off, and we can all agree on how refreshing it is to not hear Levels or the same mindless hands-in-the-air pop songs so common to his sets today. The tracklist is as diverse as it is exciting, starting off with a few disco numbers, mixing two of Justice‘s old-school mega-hits, into a mid-section of deep, Pryda-like progressive. Dropping his own edit of Major Lazer‘s hit Get Free, as well as Jessie Ware‘s 110%, the mix starts to trail off at the end, perhaps trying to hard to set the tone for RL Grime with a heavy, out-of-place dubstep rendition of “Niggas In Paris”. All in all, great work by Avicii showing his range as a DJ, and even better on Diplo for giving him the opportunity. Check out the tracklisting and stream below:

Next up was RL Grime, quickly rising as one of today’s trap proteges. The mix is a beautiful blend of modern trap bangers and classic hip-hop beats, all with RL’s own spin on the production. Highlights include Hudson Mohawke‘s wonky high-hat beat “Cbat”, as well as a new remix of Jamie Lidell‘s “What A Shame” that’s got the entire blogosphere talking. Can’t forget my personal favourite, a perfectly executed mash-up of Jakwob‘s “Detox” with a classic house-garage vocal from Masters At Work, that gives a rare euphoric vibe to trap music while still keeping the beat deep and mean. Another great blend by RL Grime on this show, we’re excited to see how he continues to grow. Check out the tracklisting and stream below:
