On Monday, Pretty Lights released the first single off his new full-length album A Color Map of the Sun, set to be released July 2nd, 2013. In his own words, “‘Around The Block’ is a feel-good, summertime hip-hop jam. It’s all about slowing down and enjoying the best moments in life. The track features the talented BKMC Talib Kweli.” For this track and the new album, Derek ditched his usual crate-and-vinyl sampling method in favor of creating everything from scratch using analog recording methods from the 70s.
As part of the album release, Pretty Lights will also put out a documentary, which he says, “was shot over two years in multiple cities where some part of the recording and producing process took place. It will give viewers a unique and intimate look at the creation of the collection of work that is “A Color Map of the Sun,” and all of the beautiful people and talented musicians that helped make it a reality.”
